Business Case
The RBTP Knowledge Base is evolving weekly as part of our pilot programs with RBA members. We’d love your input — submit feedback or help shape the protocol in real time by joining a pilot.
A critical step in the adoption of RBTP within your business is the development of a business case. Your business case should present a compelling argument for committing resources to the process of adapting your business processes and building the technology required to get the most from UNTP/RBTP.
Benefits of implementing RBTP
Implementing the Responsible Business Transparency Protocol (RBTP) positions your business to respond confidently to increasing regulatory, commercial, and consumer demands for supply chain transparency and ESG accountability. The RBTP framework, based on the UN Transparency Protocol, enables digitally verifiable data exchange, transforming compliance burdens into strategic advantages.
By adopting RBTP, members can realize value in multiple areas:
- Protect market access: RBTP credentials support compliance with emerging regulations like the EUDR, US UFLPA, and EU CSDDD. Verifiable product data ensures smoother customs clearance and avoids trade restrictions.
- Capture value through price and margin uplift: Buyers and consumers are increasingly willing to pay premiums for trusted, sustainable products. RBTP enables the proof of those claims through Digital Product Passports (DPPs).
- Reduce compliance costs: Automate ESG data collection, simplify audit processes, and reduce penalties or overpayments (e.g. under CBAM) through high-quality emissions and traceability data.
- Strengthen brand reputation: Transparent and trusted sustainability claims enhance brand value and customer loyalty - critical in ESG-driven markets.
- Access better financing: Digitally assured ESG credentials improve supplier creditworthiness and access to sustainable finance or supply chain finance.
- Improve digitalization efficiency: Real-time, machine-readable data reduces manual handling, improves forecasting, and enables more agile supply chain management.
- Counter fraud and protect IP: Verifiable credentials help combat counterfeiting by proving the provenance and authenticity of goods throughout the supply chain.
These benefits are not theoretical. The RBTP team provides guided workshops and templates to help members assess these value drivers for their business, quantify the expected return, and build a compelling internal case for change.
How to get started
There are two ways to develop your business case:
-
Supported through a pilot: the RBTP team can support the development of your business case. Our experts will facilitate online workshops to help you explore the theories of value behind UNTP, the changes you may need to make to adopt it and express the value proposition for investment. From there, you will have enough ideas and content to develop your business case in the way your organization might mandate. For support contact the team.
-
Self-serve: Alternatively, download the business case template and workshop materials to run the process yourself. The RBTP team is available to give advice on how to facilitate the workshop or interpret the template.
What a business case covers
While every organization has unique requirements for an internal business case, we have developed a process that explores:
- UNTP theories of value: we cover the core areas where we know UNTP can add value and ask you to develop a rough estimate for the impact of each theory.
- Mapping your supply chain: an exercise that asks your team to build a view on the key elements of your supply chain to highlight where value can be created or costs incurred.
- Structuring your arguments: using a pre-defined template, answer questions that are common to most corporate business cases.
